Buy a yurt: A choice that turns round!

The yurt is the traditional dwelling of the nomadic peoples living in Central Asia: Mongols, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz... More than a tent, the yurt is the fruit of a thousand-year-old ancestral know-how. This house is designed to withstand the most extreme climates. Warm in winter and cool in summer, the structure disassembles so that it can be moved easily with yaks, horses or camels. For us Westerners, it can easily be moved using a small trailer.

This ingenious structure requires no nails and no ground anchoring! Its walls are collapsible wooden trellises assembled in a circle with horsehair cords. In the center, a dome called tonoo is erected on two pillars to support the frame made up of poles. It is the number of lattice walls that determines the floor area of the yurt. The yurt is easily heated with a slow combustion fireplace and becomes comfortable very quickly in winter. The bane of the yurt is actually water. This is why it is important that the assembly is done with care and that the yurt is well maintained. In winter, the yurt requires very little attention. Even though the yurt can receive a very good snow load, it is advisable to clear the snow from the roof regularly.

Everything is covered with felt made from sheep's wool and a water-resistant cotton canvas. Depending on its size, it takes about 5 hours and 2 people to set up a yurt. Four seasons, this Mongolian nomad tent fits into any landscape. For parties, shows, as a guest room, as an alternative habitat, as a hunting cabin, to sell mulled wine on a ski slope or simply to spend time with family or friends.

Imported directly from Mongolia, our yurts are made almost entirely by hand. Painted wood, felt and high quality decorated canvas as well as braided horsehair ropes make our yurts a high-end product appreciated by many. They can be delivered with traditional furniture. Much of the material we import comes directly from rural areas of Mongolia to help stem the exodus, a scourge in this country of nomads.

The structure, i.e. the tonoo, the door, the central pillars and the poles are painted by hand with the traditional Mongolian motifs. Its orange hue adorned with green, blue and pink patterns gives a colorful and warm atmosphere inside the yurt. Going a bit out of tradition, our yurts can also be ordered in other colors, with the same patterns. In addition, our yurts are perfectly adapted to the Quebec climate!

In Mongolia, yurts are installed directly on the ground. In Quebec, the more humid climate requires some special adaptations that will extend the life of your yurt. For example, we have developed R10 insulated floors which are perfectly suited to our yurts. Round in shape, these floors are easily removable and can be simply placed on cement blocks. We strongly recommend their use so that you have a foolproof yurt. Basically, the yurt domes have 4 inserts that cover half the surface. Thus, in case of rain, you must fold down a piece called the hursh. In order to avoid such sometimes redundant manipulations, we offer the option of finishing the dome in lexan, a very durable product that lets through 30% more light than normal glass.

Well framed!
